So Much More

Aislinn

I was still awake when Kieran returned home several hours later. He stilled at the sight of me in our bedroom, his sword slipping from his bloody fingertips. It clattered against the stone floor, but he paid it no heed.

“You’re here,” Kieran murmured, moving toward me without breaking eye contact. I was sitting cross-legged in the center of our bed, too tired to pace but unable to sleep. He stood at the foot of the bed, his hands held stiffly at his sides.

“You can sit with me,” I said, patting the spot beside me. “I promise I won’t freak out.”

Kieran shook his head and gestured at his grime-coated body. Dried blood and black scorch marks covered every inch of him, and flecks of ash were stuck in his hair. “Not until I’ve bathed.” He didn’t move, his serious eyes fastened on mine. Searching. Gauging. His throat bobbed slightly. “Will you be here when I’m done?”

“Yes,” I whispered. “I’m not going anywhere.” There was so much I wanted to say to him; so many apologies that would never be able to make up for the hell I’d put him through. But words were meaningless without the actions to back them up. So I planned to stay and show him just how sorry I truly was.

Kieran held my gaze for five more heartbeats, then inclined his head and strode into the bathroom. I heard the clatter of his knives hitting the floor and the telltale spray of the shower. Scooting toward the head of the bed, I propped up some pillows and eased back against them with my hands tucked behind my head. His shower took less than ten minutes.

When Kieran returned to our bedroom, he was wearing only a towel around his tapered waist. His eyes immediately found me and a faint smile curved the corner of his mouth. It wasn’t enough to bring out his dimple, but it was enough of a smile that I felt like my presence pleased him. I watched him cross toward the long, wooden dresser.

Fresh scars covered his torso and arms, but they appeared to have already healed from his natural regeneration. As he dug through the top drawer, I noticed a stubborn cut on the ridge of his shoulder blade that hadn’t healed like the others.

“Arcanir injury?” I asked. He glanced over at me with his brow raised in question, and I tapped my hand against the back of my shoulder.

“Aye.” Kieran pulled a black, long-sleeved undershirt over his head. “It was an arcanir dagger, but dinnae fash. This was the only injury.” He finished dressing and joined me on the bed, his movements careful. Hesitant. Like I was a deer that might bolt at the slightest provocation.

Sliding over to my usual side of the bed, I turned down the plaid bedding and slipped under the soft sheets. I didn’t want there to be any question of my staying. Perched on the edge of the bed, Kieran’s eyes roved over my long nightdress and the messy hair that tumbled over my shoulders.
